Mosaic Damascus Fighter

The closer you inspect this blade, the more subtle, complex, and beautiful details reveal themselves. From subtle facets and geometric delights to an incredibly active and rare piece of Turkish walnut burl with endless swirls and deep, rich, colors, this is truly a show stopping take on the fighter. While crafting this blade, I included design influences from medieval fantasy artwork, American old west colors and materials, and, of course, my own dramatic artistic style.

The Damascus which I forged for this blade is not just any explosion pattern, but a very different and slightly more angular take on the classic pattern that I’m absolutely delighted with. The guard is medium carbon steel which I salvaged from an early 1900’s farming implement wheel axle. I gave it a matte black finish to contrast with the highly polished blade and handle. I meticulously hand-sculpted every facet of the guard, including the pointed transition into the heirloom fit bronze spacer.

This transition is one of the most daunting to do from one metal to another, due to the hardness of each material, requiring countless test fits and subtle hand adjustments to perfect. However, this transition wasn’t only done once, but twice, as the spacer transitions into the spectacular heirloom fit Turkish Walnut Burl handle. This handle carries over the complex convex and concave facets into the wood. Refining the crisp facets and sculpting on this handle was one of the most difficult steps in this entire build, but I’m extremely pleased with the edge result! To top it all off, the through-tang construction terminates in a fossilized mammoth ivory pommel nut cover.
